Humpback Whales Lost
in Sacramento River To Receive Treatment from
Bayer Animal Health
Donated product will be used to speed healing of whales'
wounds, strengthening them for trip to Pacific Ocean
SHAWNEE, Kan., May 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Bayer Animal Health and
partner veterinarians worked throughout the night on Friday to
deliver a special formulation of donated product that will assist
the rescue efforts for two humpback whales that have been wandering
in the Sacramento River for several days.
According to the latest update from the NOAA's National Ocean
Service, Office of Response and Restoration, on Saturday, veterinarians
and marine biologists will continue to conduct health assessment
activities on the whales, which may involve sampling the skin
and breath. The team is also continuing to pursue the formulations
and delivery methods for administering antibiotics to the whales.
"As one of the worldwide leaders in the animal health
industry, Bayer has been committed to helping strengthen the bond
between animals and humans for nearly 90 years. The intense rescue
efforts for these whales and the public's interest in their wellbeing
demonstrates that our bond with animals extends from dogs and
cats all the way to whales," said Dr. Cary Christensen, senior
director of veterinary services for Bayer HealthCare, Animal Health
Division. "We're honored to be able to assist in the recovery
efforts and will continue to keep the whales and the rescuers
in our thoughts."
The whales have suffered wounds after an apparent collision
with a boat's propeller, and the rescuers led by veterinarians
from the Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito, Calif., have grown
concerned that the continuing deterioration of the wounds could
prohibit the rescue efforts.
