Celebrate 4th
of July With Energy Independence
ComEd offers fun ways to conserve energy and save
money
CHICAGO, July 3 /PRNewswire/ -- ComEd encourages customers
to celebrate July 4th with fun summer activities that also have
an extra benefit of reducing energy use, saving money, and protecting
the environment. While electricity remains a good value -- with
ComEd average residential rates still below the national average
and the top 10 metropolitan areas -- customers can enjoy summer
and save money by taking advantage of the following fun seasonal
tips:
-- Have a picnic or barbeque with family, friends, or neighbors.
Reduce
your use of appliances like stoves or ovens to keep your home
cool and
save money.
-- Keep your home thermostat between 75-78 degrees and visit pools,
water-parks, beaches or air-conditioned libraries and museums
for a
low- or no-cost way to cool down. Kids can enjoy an active and
fun day
while lowering their use of energy-burning flat-screen televisions
and
video games.
-- Take a cool shower instead of a bath to use nearly half as
much hot
water. Water heating accounts for about 16 percent of energy used
in
the home, making it customers' third largest energy expense.
ComEd also advocates properly planting trees to reduce energy
costs. This fun family project is environmentally friendly and
adds aesthetic value to the home. Safe and sensible planting can
also save customers up to $250 in heating and cooling costs annually.
A few tips for planting the right tree in the right place include:
-- Plant trees to the south and west of the home to block afternoon
and
evening sun. ComEd recommends large, deciduous trees like oaks
and
maples. Pines and spruces planted to the north and west of the
home
can provide a winter windbreak as well.
-- Utilize trees and shrubs to shade, but not block, air conditioners.
A
shaded unit uses as much as 10 percent less energy than the same
one
operating in the sun.
-- Do not plant trees that can grow to heights of 25 feet under
or near
overhead power lines.
"Chicago is a great place to enjoy summer fun with family
and friends. ComEd wants customers to know that conserving energy
can be as simple as doing the things they already enjoy,"
said ComEd President Barry Mitchell.
