"What Does Love Mean?" See How 4-8 Year-Old Kids Describe Love
by Ladan Lashkari

A group of professional people posed this question to a group of 4 to 8 year-olds: "What does love mean?"

The answers they got were broader and deeper than anyone could have imagined. See what you think...

_____

"When my grandmother got arthritis, she couldn't bend over and paint her toenails anymore. So my grandfather does it for her all the time, even when his hands got arthritis too. That's love."

Rebecca - age 8

_____

"When someone loves you, the way they say your name is different. You just know that your name is safe in their mouth."

Billy - age 4

_____

"Love is what makes you smile when you're tired."

Terri - age 4

_____

"Love is when my mommy makes coffee for my daddy and she takes a sip before giving it to him, to make sure the taste is OK."

Danny - age 7

_____

"Love is when you kiss all the time. Then when you get tired of kissing, you still want to be together and you talk more. My Mommy and Daddy are like that. They look gross when they kiss."

Emily - age 8

_____

"Love is what's in the room with you at Christmas if you stop opening presents and listen."

Bobby - age 7 (Wow!)

_____

"If you want to learn to love better, you should start with a friend who you hate."

Nikka - age 6 (we need a few million more Nikka's on this planet)

_____

"Love is when you tell a guy you like his shirt, then he wears it everyday."

Noelle - age 7

_____

"Love is like a little old woman and a little old man who are still friends even after they know each other so well."

Tommy - age 6

_____

"During my piano recital, I was on a stage and I was scared. I looked at all the people watching me and saw my daddy waving and smiling.

He was the only one doing that. I wasn't scared anymore."

Cindy - age 8

_____

"Love is when Mommy gives Daddy the best piece of chicken."

Elaine - age 5

_____

"Love is when Mommy sees Daddy smelly and sweaty and still says he is handsomer than Robert Redford."

Chris - age 7

_____

"Love is when your puppy licks your face even after you left him alone all day."

Mary Ann - age 4

_____

"I know my older sister loves me because she gives me all her old clothes and has to go out and buy new ones." (Now THIS is love!)

Lauren - age 4

_____

"When you love somebody, your eyelashes go up and down and little stars come out of you." (what an image!)

Karen - age 7

_____

"Love is when Mommy sees Daddy on the toilet and she doesn't think it's gross."

Mark - age 6

_____

"You really shouldn't say 'I love you' unless you mean it. But if you mean it, you should say it a lot. People forget."

Jessica - age 8

_____

And the final one...

Author and lecturer Leo Buscaglia once talked about a contest he was asked to judge. The purpose of the contest was to find the most caring child.

The winner was a four year old child whose next door neighbor was an elderly gentleman who had recently lost his wife.

Upon seeing the man cry, the little boy went into the old gentleman's yard, climbed onto his lap, and just sat there.

When his Mother asked what he had said to the neighbor, the little boy said,

"Nothing, I just helped him cry."

10 Easy Steps to Writing a Memorable Love Letter
by Bryan Noonan

Perhaps the most romantic and memorable thing you can do in your relationship with your lover is to write a love letter to him/her. Love letters have been used for centuries by famous and not-so-famous people to express their passion and feelings to their love. It's a great idea. The problem is that most of us (especially men) aren't that great at writing love letters and most of us don't even know the first thing about writing in verse (poems).

Here are 10 simple tips to help you get started:

1. Be yourself. If you are writing a love letter to someone then you obviously care about that person. Just be yourself and don't try to be someone you are not.

2. Write conversationally. If you've browsed the Internet and read famous love letters from years gone by you've probably seen lots of 'thee' and 'thou' and other words no longer in our everyday vocabulary. While these words make a nice famous OLD love letter, they aren't suitable for writing a modern day love letter. You might in fact sound a little rediculous adding these to your letters.

Say something like, "When you smile you brighten up the entire room, driving out the shadows of sadness lingering there and instead filling the room with love and warmth." Don't try to make it 'old' by saying "Thy smile doth brighten the entire room..."

3. Be truthful. Don't say things you don't mean. If you really don't think your sweetheart is the most beautiful person in the entire world don't say she is. If you don't think your man is the hunkiest and handsomest person in the universe you better not say he is. Tell the truth. Find something you truly admire or love about your sweetheart and dwell on that.

Be honest, but don't always say all you are thinking. "I love the way you care about people and have such a wonderful heart to care for people's needs" is much better than "I love the way you care about people, I just wish you would care about me a little more."

4. Handwrite your letter & use good paper Typing your letter may be easier and email may be the fastest way to transport it, but there is something to be said for a a hand-written letter on good quality paper being delivered in the mailbox. Even if you are married and live together, mail your sweetheart the letter. It'll brighten his/her day like you can never imagine.

5. Use appropriate openings and closings If you've just started dating an opening of "My dearest love, Tina" may be a little overkill. You don't want to scare your romance off. Something a little more tempered like "To Tina, with my affection" may be more appropriate. If you're married or have been dating for some time, you might try a more affectionate opening such as, "My dearest love, Tina" or "To the love of my life".

Likewise with closings. If you've only been dating a short time use something like "With my affection", or "Yours truly". Longer relationships can use something more passionate like "With all my love", or "Longing for your embrace"

6. Be careful of your grammer and spelling If your sweetheart is 'more better' at spelling, grammer and punctuation he/she will notice the errors and it will distract from the message. Be sure to use proper spelling, grammer and punctuation. If you are unsure of yourself in this area then type the letter first in Microsoft Word (or the Mac equivalent) and use the spell check and grammer check. Then hand-write for the best affect.

7. Use a proper closing paragraph. When all has been said in the letter end it well. Don't drone on and on, but end with a summary of why you are so in love.

8. Decorate or 'memoralize' your love letter Use a light spray of perfume or cologne or paste a picture of yourself or the two of you together. If you're an artist (even an amature artist) add your own personalization through art. Make it uniquely yours.

9. Sign your letter. In your haste and love drunk daze don't forget to sign your letter!

10. Get creative with the 'envelope' Use a wax seal if you have it available. Or hand deliver your letter rolled up and tied with a ribbon, or rolled up in a bottle ("message in a bottle"). Find a way to make the delivery unique. Whatever you do, don't email your love letter. Send it in the mail with a stamp if nothing else!

10 Love Words and How to Use Them
by Ruth Marlene Friesen

The ancient Greeks had four unique words, which when the Bible was translated into English all became LOVE. They are agape (God's love), storge (family love), philia (love between friends), and eros (sexual love, which is not in the Bible). Our language is not that destitute that we can't speak more specifically when we want to talk about love.

Do a little brainstorming. What other words come to mind when you think "love"? Which do you substitute?

Here's my list; decision respect devoted loyal bless honour romance compassion favour affections fondness infatuation delight, enjoy like, admire beloved worship

That may be enough for now. I'm sure you can come up with more, depending on the meaning you apply to love.

I'll take just 10 of those words and show how they refine and explain love in specific situations. Feel free to add them to your daily vocabulary year round.

1. Decision - a thesaurus defines love 6 ways as a noun and only 3 ways as a verb. I prefer to think of love as a verb. We have to make a decision to do it. Don't wait for love to land on you like a friendly bird.

2. Respect - choose to respect someone, and they will begin to favour you, and a mutual love relationship will grow out of that.

3. Devoted - once married, remain devoted to your spouse. It's easy at the beginning to be devoted to your children, but love involves repeated decisions to remain devoted no matter what they do later on.

4. Loyal - in families as well as friendships, it is important to show loyalty, to protect that other one's reputation, You do that by not telling of his or her mistakes and foilibles as jokes on coffee row. Rather you drop good words of appreciation and describe your beloved in kind and gentle terms. You keep the secrets of the one you are loyal to, that is loving them.

5. Bless - do good, kind things for them. Here's the verb in love again; say words of encouragement and gratitude and hope too.

6. Compassion - this is not feeling-sorry-for-you pity, but a caring identification with the person who has a need, whether for a family member, a friend, an acquaintance, or a stranger orphaned by a tsunami wave. But not just identification. Compassion only occurs when you get up and do something for the person you love. Up until then, you only have pity.

7. Favour, like and admire - if these were on a colour wheel, they would be shades of the same colour. We all like to win the favour and admiration of others. Our kids get ahead in school better, if their teacher and the classmates favour or like them. But have you ever considered that you might improve someone's lot by showing them favour, and speaking admiringly to them? Another way of describing blessing, actually. Even if you give away your love like this to a child, or a stranger that you'll never see again, give freely!

8. Affections and fondness - technically these look like nouns, but just as love unexpressed is useless, so you must exert yourself to show affection and fondness.

9. Delight - one of the best proofs of you love someone, is to revel in their presence and all they say and do. Parents who delight in their kids find this comes naturally. It works in all other relationships too. Lovers mutually enjoy one another.

10. Worship - we are to totally love God. We choose to respect Him by obeying His Word. This includes daily devotional times in His presence. and loyalty in what we say about Him. We bless God when we show favour and kindnesses to others, What He likes best of all is when we delight in Him and praise Him enthusiastically.

This is mutual, for we read in Zephaniah 3:10, "The LORD your God is with you, he is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you, He will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing." (NIV)

Deuteronomy 33:27 tells us, "The eternal God is your refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms." (NIV)

Take this image with you; God carries you and me on His strong, everlasting arm. He delights in us, and sings over us with glad songs!

That liberates me to love Him back, and to love others as proof.
