Charter School Overcomes Adversity To Celebrate 10 Year Anniversary

West Palm Beach, FL (BlackNews.com 1/7/09) - Holding classes on school buses, in public libraries, parks, and make-shift trailers are distant memories for the staff and supporters of the Joseph Littles-NGUZO SABA Charter School, but their struggle for continuing success isn't over. After seeing their children labeled learning disabled, these parents from the poorest community in Palm Beach County finally found someone who believed in their children, and they were not about to let go. They viewed learning by school bus, and moving from place to place a mere inconvenience. The curriculum includes year-long studies that include Black history, not just the profiles that appear during Black History Month.

NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED AUTHOR AND SPEAKER, DARRELL "COACH D" ANDREWS FORMS PARTNERSHIP WITH CHARACTER COUNTS!

To Permeate Character Education within Urban Schools

Bear, DE (BlackNews.com 6/18/07) - Darrell "Coach D" Andrews, author, speaker and consultant has partnered with CHARACTER COUNTS!, an organization aimed at strengthening young lives through character education. The purpose of the partnership with CC! is to motivate urban schools, students, parents, educators and community leaders to make character development a top priority.

"Many of our African-American and Latino youth are not exhibiting the character needed to succeed in school and life," says Andrews. "If we can establish a comprehensive system of character development that is embraced by our schools, parents and communities we can improve the academic outcomes, decrease crime rates and help our urban youth get a sense of self-worth and self-pride for their lives."

CC! is the most widely-implemented approach to character education, reaching millions of youth, schools and communities across the U.S . The CC! framework promotes the Six Pillars of Character: Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring and Citizenship. By using the T.E.A.M approach (Teaching children that character counts, Enforcing the Six Pillars of character, Advocating character and Modeling good behavior) thousands of schools, communities and organizations have made an impact in young lives.

"We are excited about our partnership with Coach D," said Julie Dwyer, national director at CC! "Although parents have the primary role of teaching character to their kids, it is just as important for everyone interacting with young people to have a supporting role."
