Black Barbershop Health Outreach Program Launches 50 City Tour

Los Angeles, CA  -- Visiting a barbershop in California this Saturday could mean more to you than getting a haircut. It might save your life. The Black Barbershop Health Outreach Program, a unique, grassroots approach to health screening and education, will be held at more than 80 barbershops in 23 cities statewide on Saturday, May 22 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. This Saturday's launch marks the first cities where the outreach program will be rolled out this year. Obama's Urban School Grants Create Local Business Opportunities

Nationwide - BlackNews.com -- According to the U.S. Department of Education, President Obama has recently announced $900 million in grants as a part of his 2011 budget to help improve student achievement at 5,000 of the nation's lowest-performing schools. Most, if not all, of the schools are in urban areas. The budget includes a $100-million program aimed at increasing college-level, dual-credit and other accelerated courses in schools, allowing students to earn a high-school diploma and an associate's degree simultaneously. Soulful New Song To Benefit Homeless Vets

Birmingham, AL (BlackNews.com) -- Soul 1st Records, an independent soul, gospel and blues label in Birmingham, AL has launched a special project with the release of the benefit song titled, "Please, Can You Lend A Helping Hand." The song chronicles an encounter with a homeless person on the streets and explores a situation many people deal with on a daily basis when being approached by the homeless. The song written and produced by soul and blues singer, Omar Cunningham, paints such a vivid picture in its story that the Soul 1st felt people could not help but to identify with the song.
